Synchronic variation in Sri Lanka Portuguese personal pronouns

Abstract This paper presents and discusses the instances of synchronic variation attested in personal pronoun paradigm modern Sri Lanka Portuguese, an endangered Portuguese-based creole spoken by relatively small communities scattered across Eastern Northern Lanka. Although Portuguese has a long history documentation dating from, at least, beginning 19th century, only few studies have explicitly reported cases variation. study aims, therefore, to fill that gap, contributing description explanation patterns relating as encountered documentary data collected between 2015 2020, over several field trips districts Ampara, Batticaloa, Jaffna, Trincomalee. The nature observed ranges from phonetic alternations strategies regularization stylistic shrinkage, often revealing effects diachronic processes variant competition substitution. Combining with surveyed linguistic trends language shift, we propose obsolescence may be responsible for some variability SLP pronouns, especially associated certain socially- or geographically-defined subsets speech community (viz. younger generations speakers Jaffna) characterized advanced loss.
